September’s National Yoga Month may have passed, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep celebrating. As the cooler months blow through, now’s the time to take advantage of yogic breathing that can clear your mind and lead you towards a faster metabolism.
As you may know, Kundalini Yoga is known for benefiting every aspect of the body, mind and spirit. What yogic aficionados may fail to mention is the additional benefits to your health, specifically your weight, that can be a result of practicing Kundalini.
By sparking the endocrine function through the glands, particularly the pituitary gland and thyroid, Kundalini’s foundational breathing technique, The Breath of Fire, can change your metabolism from the inside-out while cleansing your blood and vital organs. Another benefit of this yogic breathing technique is the reduction of stress, which can lessen anxiety and provide weight management benefits. When you’re less stressed, you may experience a reduction in unhealthy cravings and decreased anxiety – both of which can help you shed a few extra pounds.
If you’re new to the Breath of Fire, here are a few easy steps to help you learn this traditional Kundalini breathing technique:
- Sit in any posture that you’re most comfortable in. You will be sitting here for a few minutes while you go through a full cycle of breathing.
- Breathe in and feel where your navel is – this is where you will channel your breath. Then begin pumping in and out while focusing on creating even, rapid inhales and exhales through the nose.
- Continue this focused breath for 3 minutes with your eyes closed, rolled up and in between the eyebrows.
I should warn you… beware of increased focus, clarity and calmness that will sure to be the topic of conversation with your friends when they want to know how you all of a sudden became so Zen.
